As happens often, I walked out of the office on Friday to find a waiting box of coffee that I’d ordered earlier in the week. What I didn’t expect was the other box that contained a few grams each of this year’s Esmeralda Special Auction samples. So, in order to drink them while they’re fresh, I invite anyone out there to join me at the Training Center at 10am this Wednesday to cup the 7 coffees from different harvest dates and portions of the Peterson’s Hacienda la Esmeralda.
Should be deeeeeelicious.

Good cupping. Breaking down Toscano into its components.

Good crowd at the cupping today, although most folks wandered in a little late, still groggy from Octane’s Thursday Night Throwdown (nice win, Matt Davis!).
Peru was the overall favorite, with comparatively high acidity, tons and tons of sweetness, almond, pistachio and citrus peel fragrance, and some unexpected savorynes.
Jagong broke the “assigned seats” rule and showed up in the middle of the table rather than on the far end as its usual. Lots of green notes–cucumbers, broccoli, peppers, and tomato vine, but not devoid of sweet red berries and chocolate. The body was “expansive” but thin and the aftertaste rather lingering and dry.
French Roast Burundi was toast, mesquite, leather, all wrapped in caramelized sugar and cherries…who knew?! Brightness was very muted and the body was smooth and heavy.
Good crowd. Solid coffees. GREAT weather.

Whether it’s because of the tryptophan or not, we’re going to be taking this Friday to enjoy a quite post-Thanksgiving rest at home, rather than a slurp-filled morning cupping at the Training Center.
